Lancers Fall in Battle to Owls

Lancers Fall in Battle to Owls

Worcester, MA- After getting back into the win column this past Wednesday, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (8-12, 2-4) is back on their home court this afternoon to host the Westfield State Owls (12-8, 3-3). In their last meeting this season, the game went down to the wire with the Owls squeezing out the 77-64, with Worcester set to flip the outcome this time around.

Final

Worcester State: 61

Westfield State: 83

How it Happened:

To start off the game the Lancers showed their defensive prowess putting together a string of stops denying any easy baskets for the Owls. Sophomore center Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would kick off Worcester State's scoring by pulling down an offensive rebound and going straight back up with it for the easy layup. For the rest of the quarter we would see both teams battle it out with the Lancer's looking to build on their momentum they set for themselves in the first. To start the second quarter we would see a high tempo game partly due to the Owl's press and quick substitutions. Despite this the Lancer's would show great composure and team chemistry to build their way past a tough Owl's defense. Smith would continue to cause problems for Westfield's defense by dominating the glass to go along with some great offensive plays as well. The Lancer's would show great effort and fight but would enter the half down 43-26 but with still time to initiate a comeback.

For the first four minutes of the third we would see the Lancer's offense come out firing with key baskets scored by sophomores Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) and Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA). For the rest of the quarter the Lancer's would showcase their fight on defense especially in the rebounding category. Lomonaco would follow suit to Smith accumulating double digit rebounds for the day. The last five minutes of the fourth quarter we would see the Lancer's offense come alive again. Senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass) would drain a three in the fourth quarter followed by another two threes put up by Lomonaco. In spite of their efforts the Lancers would ultimately end up losing this conference matchup 83-61.

Both Lomonaco and Smith would finish the day with double-doubles. Hannah Lomonaco would lead the Lancers in scoring with 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds as SMith would record 13 points with 11 rebounds.
