Women's Soccer Blanks Wentworth, 2-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting Wentworth on Thursday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears even their 2019 record at 6-6, while the visiting Leopards fall to 4-8-1.

The game was scoreless at the break. Vincent hit the side of the post with a shot from the left side in the seventh minute, while Wentworth senior forward Jess Poratti (Essex Junction, Vt.) hit the post on a breakaway in the 38th minute.

The Bears had a goal called back due to an offside call early in the second half.

Vincent broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute with senior netminder Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) picking up her first career assist. With the wind at her back, Souza's punt sailed well over midfield and bounced over the Wentworth defensive backfield. Vincent beat a defender to the ball, one-touched around the goalkeeper and buried a shot into the open cage.

Just over five minutes later, Vincent extended the BSU lead to 2-0 with her team-leading tenth goal of the 2019 campaign. Senior forward Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) recorded her team-best fifth assist of the season on the strike. Sanders sent a cross into the six that deflected off the diving keeper's hand and Vincent tapped the ball into the open net.

The Bears finished with a 13-10 shot advantage for the game as well as a 12-4 edge in corner kick attempts.

Souza turned aside three shots to record her sixth win of the season and fourth shutout. She made an outstanding diving stop on a shot by freshman midfielder Macy Paquin (Somerset, Mass.) early in the second half to keep the game scoreless at the time.

Junior goalkeeper Allison Haynes (Shelton, Conn.) made four saves in the setback for the Leopards.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday at noon, The Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Salem State University, while the Leopards host Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Roger Williams University.

Notes: With her two goals, Vincent increased her career scoring total to 64 points (27G, 10A) as she moved into sole possession of seventh place on the Bears' all-time scoring list….Sanders tied Lisa Allen (1991-94) and Christine Soucy (2006-09) for fourth place all-time at BSU with her 19th career assist.
