Murphy Leads St. Joe’s Past Framingham State

Standish, ME - Sophomore Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) continues to impress and netted 19 points to help the Monks to an 82-69 victory over Framingham State tonight. Murphy grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 8 assists as St. Joe's improves to 5-2.

The Rams were led by freshman Bill Carey (Abington, MA) with a game-high 21 points. Earlier in the season, Framingham had beaten perennial DIII powerhouse Williams College, so this was a great win for the Monks.

The Monks controlled the game from the tap, racing out to an 8-0 lead until senior Derek Wigman (Pembroke, MA) scored Framingham's first points of the game with two free throws at 16:27. St. Joe's led by as much as 19 in the half, but the Rams (6-3) mounted a comeback, draining back-to-back three-pointers during the final two minutes of the half and closed the gap to 37-27 at the break.

A slight 45-44 scoring advantage would be all the Monks needed in the second stanza to hold off the Rams.

In addition to Murphy, four other players scored in double digits for the Monks. Senior Colby Emmons (Portland, ME) shot a perfect 7 for 7 from the floor for 14 points and GR Chad Pulkkinen (Windham, ME) had 13 points. Senior Marcus Alexander (Niceville, FL) and sophomore R.J. Mattison (Hamden, CT) finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Framingham had two other players in double digits, junior Michael Costa (Holbrook, MA) recorded 16 points and 8 rebounds and junior Rob Scarpato (Hopkinton, MA) had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

St. Joe's hosts the Maine Event Tournament and plays Husson College on Friday, December 29th at 7 PM.
