Framingham, Mass. - The Salem State women's basketball team erased a 14-point second half deficit to beat the Framingham State Rams by a score of 83-80 in a MASCAC clash Saturday afternoon in Framingham.  

Prior to the game the Rams honored junior Flannery O'Connor who scored her 1,000th career point on December 3rd.  

THE BASICS: 

- Score:  Salem State 83. Framingham State 80 

- Records:  Framingham State (11-4, 3-2 MASCAC), Salem State (9-10, 4-2 MASCAC) 

- Location:  Logan Gymnasium – Framingham, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • The Rams jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter led by nine points from Flannery O'Connor to end the first quarter up 22-13.  

  • The Vikings cut the Rams lead to four points midway through the second on a Ernidia Goncalves layup. Rams freshman Gabriella Redford hit a trey at the buzzer to send the teams into the break with the Rams leading 41-33. 

  • The Rams led by 14 about halfway through the third quarter before the Vikings went on a 16-2 run capped by a Goncalves layup that tied the game at 53 late in the third. The Rams jumped back out to a couple five-point leads but the Vikings would again tie at 65 with just over six minutes to go in the fourth.  

  • With the game tied at 67 Jenna Tavanese sank a trey with just over three minutes to play to give the Rams back the lead. After trading a few possessions Kylie Gates sunk a layup for the Vikings to take their first lead of the game with just over a minute to go. O'Connor answered on the other end but Gates drained another layup to give the Vikings a 78-77 lead with just 33 seconds to play.  

  • The Rams turned the ball over on their next possession and fouled with just over 20 seconds remaining. The Vikings made the first but missed the second from the line, the Rams grabbed the rebound and called timeout advancing the ball with 19 seconds remaining. The Rams would again turn the ball over and foul on the Vikings inbound.  

  • Salem made both to go up 81-77 and the Rams next possession was unsuccessful. After another foul, Salem again went 1-for-1 from the line and the Rams hit a long three-pointer to cut the deficit to two. Framingham again fouled, but with one second remaining and no timeouts the clock expired before they regained possession.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Abuk Teng led all scorers with 28 points on 11-for 14 from the field. Gates scored 20 points with seven boards, seven assists and a steal while Goncalves added 16 pints and 15 rebounds for the double-double.  

  • O'Connor led the Rams with 22 points and 12 rebounds, going 12-for-14 from the line. Katherine Haselton scored 21 with eight boards, three assists and two swipes. Katty Haidul added 18 points with seven rebounds and Gwendolyn Carpenter had eight points with a game-high nine assists.  

  • The Rams shot 42% from the field, 30% from long range and 74% from the line on the afternoon.  

  • The Vikings converted 45% from the floor and made the most of their 6-for-12 from long range while only converting on 55% from the charity stripe.  

UP NEXT: 

The Rams return to the court on Wednesday evening when they travel to Worcester State for a MASCAC tilt starting at 7:30pm. The Vikings will be off until a week from today when they also travel to Worcester State for a 2pm start.
