Falcons Fall To Owls, 71-46

Keene, N.H. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped a 71-46 decision to the Owls of Keene State College this afternoon in non-conference action from the Spaulding Gymnasium.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Keene State grabbed a 6-0 lead on three-pointers from senior Kenzie Bennett (Lake George, N.Y.) and freshman Hailey Derosia (Vernon, Vt.) before Fitchburg State cut the lead to 8-5 as senior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) buried a three ball. The Owls upped its margin (20-13) with a bucket from sophomore Jenny Freedman (North Hampton, N.H.), but junior Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) hit a layup for the Falcons to the cut the lead to 20-16.

2nd quarter

Fitchburg State knotted the score at 20-20 with senior Emma Thomson (York, Maine) burying a three pointer. Keene State regained the lead (21-20) on a free throw from Derosia. The Owls extended their edge, 30-24 on a three point play by newcomer Arianna Hebert (Portsmouth, N.H.), but the Falcons responded as freshman Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.) and Marazzi sank two free throws each to cut the lead to 30-28 going into the break.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Keene State went on a 13-0 run, capped by a Hebert layup for the 43-28 lead before junior Samantha Maglione (Bolton, Mass.) connected on a three pointer to cut the lead to 43-31.

 4th quarter

Keene State upped its margin 65-26 on a three pointer from newcomer Katie Martineau (Farmington, N.H.). Fitchburg State countered with a three pointer from Marazzi and free-throw by freshman Alexxus Afriyie (Southbridge, Mass.). The Owls would earn their first win the season however with the 71-46 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Green and Gold were led by Marazzi with a game-best 19 points, three rebounds and one steal
  • Maglione chipped it with eight points, two caroms and two steals for Fitchburg State
  • For the Albertus Magnus Falcons, Nowlin registered a game-leading 23 points and three steals
  • Osmond chipped in with 22 points, six rebounds and nine assists for the visitors
  • 6th meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 1-5 all-time when taking on the Owls
  • Fitchburg State shot 12-of-47 (25.5%) from the field and (6-for-23) 26.1% from downtown
  • Keene State finished 26-of-53 (49.1%) overall and (7-for-18) 38.9% for beyond the arc
  • Keene State held a 41-29 margin on the glass
