Late Touchdown Lifts Football to 25-22 Victory over Fitchburg State

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University football team used a 65-yard touchdown pass from Luke Thompson to take the lead and a stop on fourth down by the defense with just over two minutes to play to secure their first victory of the season 25-22 over Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Bowditch Field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams amassed 311 yards of offense in the game including 273 passing, while the Falcons were held to 245 total yards including 131 yards on the ground. 

  • Thompson completed 3-of-9 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns, while Tanner Leo went 5-for-9 for 88 yards with a touchdown and a pick. 

  • Alex Maia made four receptions for 176 yards including a touchdown, while EJ Nichols made five catches for 97 yards and a pair of scores. 

  • Kymauny Roland paced the Rams defense with six tackles, all solo, including two for a loss and a sack, while Tyrell Fuller, Carl Renaudin, Nate Florio and Hames Wilder all had six solo stops apiece. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons got on the board in the opening minutes of the second quarter on a safety and added a 20-yard touchdown pass from Sahir Gomez to lead 10-0 midway through the quarter. 

  • The Rams used a 51-yard catch and run from Leo to Nichols to get on the board with just over four to play in the half. Matthew Farley converted the extra point closing the gap to 10-7 at the half. 

  • The Rams grabbed their first lead of the day on Nichols second touchdown catch of the day. This one was a 15-yard grab from Thompson. Farley's extra point put the Rams up 14-10. 

  • The Falcons answered with a score of their own, but the extra point was blocked and they led 16-14 after three quarters. 

  • The Rams opened the fourth quarter with a 27-yard field goal from Farley retaking the lead 17-16. 

  • Fitchburg State grabbed the lead back with just over six minutes to play but missed the two-point conversion and led 22-17. 

  • The Rams responded with a three play 56 yards drive capped by a 65-yard touchdown pass from Thompson to Maia. The Rams converted the two-point try and led 25-22 with just under five to play. 

  • The Rams defense sealed the game holding the Falcons short on a fourth and four from midfield.
