NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team opened its home schedule with a bang, sweeping the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 13-2 (5 innings) and 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Shea Softball Complex.
The Falcons used a 10-run third inning to take over game one and rallied from a one-run deficit with a five-run sixth inning to take game two.
Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) was 5-for-6 throughout the two games, driving in three runs and scoring two. Mikaela Scwhippert (Whippany, N.J.) was 4-for-6, including two doubles with four runs and three RBI.
Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) had three hits over the course of the two games with three runs and two RBI.
Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) pitched a complete game to open the day, striking out three batters. Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) pitched 5.2 innings in the second game, striking out six batters and not allowing an earned run. Ema Signore (East Haven, Conn.) came in relief and earned the game two win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Arent got out of an early jam in the top of the first inning, Smith and Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) opened up the bottom of the inning with walks and Scwhippert drove them both in with a double down the line to make it a 2-0 game. An RBI groundout by Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) made it a 3-0 game.
- Arent cruised through the next two innings before the Falcons took control of the game in the bottom of the third. Arent helped her own cause with a single to leadoff the inning followed by two more from Scwhippert and Carangelo to plate the first run of the big inning. Consecutive bases loaded walks and RBI singles from Gabby Rubino (Southington, Conn.) and Smith made it an 8-0 game. After an RBI groundout and a wild pitch scored two more runs, Arent came up again in the inning with an infield single to score Smith. Back-to-back doubles from Scwhippert and Carangelo capped the inning with two more runs.
- Mass. Maritime scored two runs in the fifth for their lone runs in the game as the game was ended via the mercy rule.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead after a two-run single by Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) after three walks to start the inning.
- The Buccaneers took their first lead of the day in the top of the third as two errors led to three runs, capped by an RBI single by Ab'c'de Patane to give them a 3-2 lead.
- Albertus tied the game in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI double from Smith.
- The Falcons took control with another big inning, scoring five more runs on just two hits as the Falcons were able to take advantage of two walks and fielding miscues by Mass. Maritime. Scwhippert had an RBI single in the inning and Edwards had a sacrifice fly to score a run.
