Vikings Sweep UMaine-Presque Isle In Season Opener

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State opened up the 2025 season on their new turf field with a pair of wins over UMaine-Presque Isle on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings won the first game 11-1 behind a complete-game effort from starter Gracie MartineauAlanis Toledano picked up the win in game two, a 9-1 six-inning victory. Salem State starts the year 2-0 while the Owls open 0-2.

Game 1

Martineau threw a complete game shutout in game one, allowing just three hits with a walk and four strikeouts in five innings pitched. Samantha Gaona-Sullivan went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI. Tara Perryman had three hits, including a double in three at-bats with two RBI while Allison Frost was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

How It Happened

  • Two errors by UMaine-Presque in the first helped put Salem State in front 2-0 after a sacrifice fly by Taylor McDermott and RBI single by Perryman.
  • Three hits by Salem State and two more errors plated two more runs in the third as an error by the first baseman and base hit off the bat of Gaona-Sullivan and an error by the right fielder made it 4-0.
  • The Vikings opened the game up in the fourth, scoring seven runs on eight hits. A ground-rule double by Alanis Toledano scored the first run. A wild pitch and two-run triple by Gaona-Sullivan then made it 8-0. McDermott's double to left and a single by Perryman brought home two more runs before Henning added another RBI double to deep left field to cap the scoring.  
  • Gracelyn Walsh (0-1) took the loss for the Owls as she allowed 11 runs - seven earned - on 12 hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2

Starter Alanis Toledano picked up the win, after allowing just a hit with five walks and six strikeouts in five innings. Sula Roberge threw one inning in relief, giving up a run on a hit with one walk allowed. Tara Perryman was 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Allison Thomas walked three times, producing two RBI.

  • Salem State scored four runs in the fourth on two hits and four walks. A wild pitch allowed Alaina Giuliano to score the first run before back-to-back wild pitches brought home McDermott and Perryman. A bases loaded walk by Abigail Richardson made the score 4-0.
  • Trailing 6-1 in the sixth, UMaine-Presque finally got on the scoreboard after a single by Sabrina Kauffman and following a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and throwing error by the catcher scored Kauffman.
  • Three runs by the Vikings in the sixth made it 9-1 on a sacrifice fly by Paige Souza and RBI single by Richardson. A bases leaded walk to Thomas then ended the game.
  • Zoe Stewart (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Owls after giving up nine runs - seven earned - on four hits with three strikeouts and 18 walks.
