BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Freshman Nolan DeAndrade (Bridgewater, Mass.) hit a pair of home runs to help lift the Bridgewater State baseball team to a 14-7 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • For the second straight game, Wentworth took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and, for the second straight game, graduate student Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) provided the offense. With two outs, junior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) singled and came around to score when McManus hit his team-leading third home run of the season. The bottom of the first saw Bridgewater State cut the lead to 2-1 when junior Cam James (Ipswich, Mass.) had an RBI triple.
  • The Leopards added a run in the top of the second as freshman Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) led off with a double, went to third when senior Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) flew out, and scored on a wild pitch. In the home half of the inning the Bears cut the lead back to 3-2 on a leadoff homerun from DeAndrade.
  • Wentworth tacked on a pair of runs in the third. Freshman Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) led off with a single and, with one out, went to third on a Peruzzi single. McManus followed with an RBI groundout which scored Sibert. Junior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) reached on an error which allowed Peruzzi to score. The hosts scored in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Theo Levinson (Arlington Heights, Ill.) drove in a run with a single.
  • The Leopards extended their lead to 7-3 in the fifth inning as Peruzzi hit a one-out single and stole second. With two outs, he moved to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a double from DiPina. A single from Robinson drove in DiPina.
  • Bridgewater State scored four in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Levinson had an RBI single, junior Jay Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) drove in two with a single, and James tied the game with an RBI double. The following inning, DeAndrade hit a two-run home run to give the Bears a 9-7 lead. An errant throw after a stolen base extended the Bears' lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Leopards threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one out as sophomore Jake Prisco (Brisgewater, Mass.) hit a one out single, went to second when Sibert reached on an error, and moved to third when freshman Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) walked. However, a strikeout and flyout ended the threat. In the bottom of the inning, a two-out error allowed a Bridgewater State run to score and Wladkowski hit a three-run home run.
  • Sophomore Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) struck out a career-high 10 batters in 4.2 innings of work. At the plate, Peruzzi and Robinson had three hits apiece while McManus had a pair of hits and drove in three runs.
