BOSTON -- Gabriel Meireles (Everett, Mass.) and Felipe Montiel (Maracaibo, Venezuela) both scored as Salem State earned their fourth straight victory with a 2-1 victory over Emerson on Saturday at Rotch Field. The Vikings now stand at at 4-0 while the Lions remain winless at 0-3.
Meireles opened the scoring in the 17th minute, accounting for the only goal in the first off a free kick. Salem State knocked in its second goal in the 67th minute off a corner kick that bounced around in front of the net until Montiel recovered the ball and fired it past David Kemp (London, England), giving the visitors a 2-0 edge. Lucas Amaral (Peabody, Mass.) was credited with the assist.
Keeper Chris Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.) had his three-game scoreless streak snapped in the 82nd minute when Emerson began to forge a comeback with the help of Bou Aziz (Nice, France) sneaking a deflection off a free kick into the goal just past the reach of Jimenez to put the Lions within one at 2-1.
However, the Vikings closed out the win despite being outshot 12-11. Emerson also held a 7-4 corner kick edge.
Jimenez earned the victory with two saves while allowing one goal through 90 minutes. David Kemp (London, England) took the loss, stopping three shots.
