Tufts Pulls Away in Second Half, Defeats Salem State 4-1

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Tufts scored three second half goals to break a 1-1 tie as the Jumbos pulled away for a 4-1 victory over the Vikings on Wednesday evening from Bello Field. Tufts improves to 2-1-2 on the season while Salem State now stands at 3-2-1.

Max Clivio scored the only goal of the first half in the 33rd minute, giving the Jumbos a 1-0 halftime lead. Tufts held a 9-2 advantage in shots as Jumbos goalie Erik Lauta did not face a shot on net. The Vikings had a prime chance to tie the game in the 59th minute as George Zuleta was awarded a penalty-kick, but Lauta denied the Vikinings' scoring chance. However, Michael Flynn tied the game for Salem State, scoring his first of the year just thirty seconds later. 

Daniel Yanez broke the stalemate for Tufts, scoring just 16 seconds after Flynn, to give Tufts a 2-0 lead. Ian Daly added another goal in the 75th minute as the Jumbos ended the game with three unanswered scores. Mikey Brady converted with less than five minutes remianing to close the scoring, making the final 4-1.

Matt Hauntsman made seven saves for Salem State before giving way to Jonathan Chasse for the final 2:19. Lauta made one stop in the victory as Sammy Kao finished the game in net for Tufts. The Jumbos held a 9-2 margin in shots on goal.
