Couillard Nets Second Overtime Game-Winner of the Week

SALEM, Mass. - Allison Couillard (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to help the Salem State Vikings defeat the Fitchburg State Falcons 2-1 on Saturday at Alumni Field. The goal from Couillard marks her second overtime winner this the week. The Vikings go to 6-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Little East Conference (LEC). Fitchburg State drops to 1-9 on the season and 0-4 in the LEC.

Fitchburg State got on the board first in the 11th minute of the first quarter. Olivia Grant (Portsmouth, N.H.) passed to Chloe Gladu (North Reading, Mass.), who put a low shot past the legs of goalie Kelli McCarthy, (Foxborough, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead.

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, Jillian Danton (Arlington, Mass.) dished a pass up field to Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass.), who was one on one with goalie Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.). Mason shot it just inside the far post to tie the game for the Vikings at 1-1.

Salem State attempted two shots with both shots on target. Fitchburg State's one shot attempt led to a goal. The Vikings had three penalty corners while the Falcons took two corners.

Neither team could score in the second half forcing overtime. In the first half of overtime, Casie Curtin (Wrentham, Mass.) had a good bid to score, but Lamprey saved it to keep Fitchburg's hopes alive.

In the second session of overtime, Curtin passed it to Couillard who blasted a shot from 10 yards to score the game-winning goal just 1:38 in. 

The Falcons finished with one shot while on the other side, the Vikings took five. Salem State had an advantage in corners taking seven while Fitchburg State took two.

McCarthy got the win in net (6-3) for the Vikings only allowing one goal. Lamprey took the loss for the Falcons (1-9) finishing with two saves and two goals allowed.
