Vikings and Cougars Play to 1-1 Stalemate

WORCESTER, Mass. – Salem State men's soccer hit the road for another midweek non-conference matchup, going up against the Cougars from Clark University. Both teams found the back of the net once, resulting in a 1-1 draw in Worcester, Massachusetts, this evening. With this result, the Vikings' record stands at 5-3-4 for the season.

How it Happened:

  • Freshman, Michael Echavarria (Boston, Mass), put the Vikings on the board first after his goal in the fourth minute of the game gave his squad an early 1-0 tilt.
  • The Cougars attempted to level the game, but they could not capitalize on any of their seven shot attempts, allowing the Vikings to maintain the one-goal advantage to enter the break.
  • Brady Whitmarsh (Attleboro, Mass.) denied the Cougars' first three shots on goal in the second half, before Clark was able to tie the game in the 79th minute with a goal of their own.
  • The Cougars had an opportunity to secure the win in the 84th minute but a crucial defensive save by James Meli (Dracut, Mass.) denied their chance and sealed the 1-1 stalemate between the squads.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Michael Echavarria's goal in the opening minutes of the game was the first of his career in the orange and blue.
  • This evening's 1-1 draw brings the Vikings overall record against the Cougars to 3-0-1 since 1985.
