Bears Get Past Vikings, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Salem State lost, 1-0 to Bridgewater State on Saturday at Mazzaferro Field as Melvin Alves accounted for the only scoring in a key Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest. The Bears improve to 6-4-2 and remain unbeaten in the MASCAC at 4-0. The Vikings go to 5-4-4 and 2-1-1 in confernece.

How it Happened:

  • Alves sent a shot inside the right post from 25 yards out in the 37th minute, which turned out to be the game-winner.
  • With about 18 minutes to go, Ekmanis made a sensational diving stop on a shot from about 25 yards out. He also stopped the rebound attempt on the play.
  • Salem State made a bid to tie the game in the closing seconds with a flurry as a header attempt was cleared off the line by a BSU defender, and Ekmanis turned aside the rebound to preserve the victory.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Marcelo Silva made six stops for Salem State while Lukas Ekmanis had five saves for Bridgewater State.
  • The Bears outshot the Vikings, 16-12. 
  • Salem State is now 33-15-6 all-time against the Bears.  

The Vikings will return home to face Fisher on Wednesday, October 16 at 4:00 pm.
