Scots Snap Viking's Win Streak

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State continued their home stint as they welcomed cross-town foe, Gordon College, to Twohig Gymnasium. The Scots were able to snap the Vikings two- game win streak after taking the 83-68 win, dropping the Vikings to 2-4 on the season.

For the home team, Irianis Delgado (Lynn, Mass.) paced her squad with 20 points and seven rebounds. Liz Zaiter (Peabody, Mass.) notched seven rebounds of her own to go along with 16 points in the effort.

The Scots saw two players with 20-point performances in Ami Rivera (Concord, N.H.), who had 27 to go along with four assists, and Madison Wynbeek (North Haledon, N.J.), who notched a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

Both squads started the game trading baskets, it was not until midway through the stanza that Abuk Teng (Manchester, N.H.) strung along three of her own to put the Vikings in front 13-10. A minute and a couple plays later, Sydney Noyes (Newburyport, Mass.) converted a layup to tie the game at 14 apiece. Each team found the bottom of the basket one more time to go into the second quarter of play at a 16-point stalemate.

At the halfway mark of the second, the Scots saw the biggest lead of the game thus far when Hannah Lomonaco (Whitinsvile, Mass.) found A. Rivera for a jumper to put their squad up 28-21. Over the next minute, A. Rivera scored five more times to extend Gordon's lead to ten points. The Vikings rallied back soon after, going on a 9-0 run and bringing the score to 35-33 with just over one minute to play in the half. The Vikings only went on to add two more points in the half, compared to the Scots six, to enter the half down 41-35.

Despite shooting poorly from the field in the third stanza, the Vikings were able to hang with the Scots due to their perfect free throw percentage to send the game into the final ten minutes of play with Gordon at the slight 55-51 advantage.

After Delgado sunk the first shot of the fourth, the Scots distanced themselves by going on a 9-0 run before Delgado stopped the bleeding with another basket of her own. With three minutes to play in the game, Gordon started to distance themselves further after back-to-back fastbreak layups put them up 78-64. One minute later, Delgado would bring her team within 10, but that would be as close as Salem would get for the remainder of the game as the Scots took the 83-68 victory over the Vikings.
