Monks Fall to Sharks, Topple Vikings in Home Tri-Match

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (6-11, 1-2 GNAC) split a women's volleyball tri-match with Simmons University (9-5, 3-0 GNAC) and Salem State University (4-10) at Mike McDevitt Court on Saturday. The Monks opened the three-match set with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 8-25, 25-20) setback at the hands of the Sharks and closed out the afternoon with a decisive 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-13) victory over the Vikings.

Simmons dispatched Salem State, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-22) in the middle match.

Simmons def. Saint Joseph's, 3-1:

After dropping the first two sets, the Monks posted an impressive 25-8 third-set victory to keep the match alive. Leading 13-7 midway through the frame, St. Joe's mounted a 12-1 run – which included eight Simmons errors and four SJC service aces.

Unfortunately for the hosts, the momentum did not continue in the fourth set, which was a see-saw battle early, but a 13-4 Sharks run resulted in a 20-10 lead and eventual 25-20 setback.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Freshman Nadia Sixto (Chattanooga, Tenn.) notched eight kills and seven total blocks
  • Senior Hanna Holden (Stoughton, Mass.) added six kills, 13 assists, three aces, and nine digs
  • Sophomore Maggie Sylvester (Barrington, N.H.) tacked on eight kills and five digs
  • Junior Sam Holland (Gilmanton, N.H.) added 10 digs

LEADERS – SIMMONS:

  • Claire Conners delivered nine kills with four digs and two total blocks
  • Kat Simeonidis tallied three kills, 28 assists, four aces, and eight digs
  • Sydney Iannantuono posted eight kills and 12 digs
  • April Beatty notched eight kills and seven digs
  • Jayla Parnell chipped in with 13 digs and two aces

Saint Joseph's def. Salem State, 3-0:

The Monks delivered 14 service aces and took advantage of 23 Salem State attack errors to cruise to the team's first 3-0 victory of the season.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sylvester led the way with seven kills and added two digs
  • Sixto posted six kills, three aces, three digs, and three block assists
  • Senior Isabel Philbrick (Milford, N.H.) boasted four aces, three kills, and four total blocks
  • Holden netted 13 assists, three aces, and five digs
  • Freshman Regan Noonan (Standish, Maine) added two kills and four total blocks
  • Holland paced the Royal Blue with 11 digs

LEADERS – SALEM STATE:

  • Presley Shairs notched five kills and three digs
  • Kailey Roche contributed with seven assists and six digs
  • Gracie Dailey posted 10 digs

Saint Joseph's will play at Husson University on Tuesday in a non-conference match set to begin at 7:00 PM.
