Colonels Fall to Falcons in Non-Conference Doubleheader

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Curry College Softball team was swept by non-conference opponent Fitchburg State University Wednesday afternoon.

With the losses, Curry dips to 4-13 overall this season

 

Game 1 - Curry 5, Fitchburg State 6

The hosting Falcons grabbed a one-run lead quickly into the afternoon matchup, Molly Grass putting her side up 1-0 with a solo home run to left field.

Curry responded in the top of the second inning, Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) scoring on an error by Fitchburg's third baseman. The Colonels tallied two more runs on a two-RBI double to centerfield from Caitlin Magnuson (Thomaston, Conn.), batting in Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Sienna Kulpa (Taunton, Mass.). Curry centerfielder Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) batted in Magnuson on a groundout to second base, closing out the scoring in the second inning while putting Curry in front 4-1. 

A second solo home run from the Falcons in the bottom of the fourth closed the Curry lead slightly. 

Curry's Natalia Okleasky (Coventry, RI) furthered the Colonels' lead with a solo homer of her own over the centerfielder's head. Curry would then lead 5-2 in the top of the sixth. 

Fitchburg State's Lundyn Forcier brought the Falcons closer to the Curry lead with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. 

The bottom of the seventh saw the hosting Falcons take the contest following an error from Curry's third baseman, allowing two runs to score. Fitchburg would close out the first matchup of the afternoon with a final score of 6-5. 


Game 2 - Curry 3, Fitchburg State 7

The Colonels struck first in the second matchup of the afternoon doubleheader. Karlie Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) marked an RBI single down the leftfield line to send in Lexi Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) for the first run of the game.

Fitchburg State kept their bats hot from the first game of the doubleheader, tallying six unanswered runs through the bottom of the fifth inning, granting the Falcons a 6-1 lead late in the game. 

Curry's second run came by way of an error at first base, allowing Hailey King (Cranston, RI) to advance to third and Madison Schwartz to score. 

An RBI double from Molly Grass put Fitchburg State up 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

Colonel's shortstop Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) marked an RBI single through the left side to send McDermott in to score in the top of the seventh inning. The Falcons would hold off any more Curry scores, taking the second matchup by a final score of 7-3.

 

Curry College Softball gets back out on the field Saturday (4/2) as they visit Wentworth for some CCC action at 12 & 2 PM.
