Falcons Blank Lasell

Falcons Blank Lasell

NEWTON, MA- In the final regular season field hockey contest of the 2011 season for the Lasell College Lasers, Fitchburg State University blanked Lasell, 5-0, in non-conference action on Grellier Field.  The win leveled out Fitchburg's record at 8-8 overall while Lasell tumbles to 3-14.

The Falcons hammered hard on the Lasers from the opening moments, out shooting Lasell 35-3 in the contest.  Lasell goalkeeper Christine Thornton (Canton, MA) made 18 stops in the game and Emily Cooper (Riverhead, NY) additionally turned aside one defensive save for the Lasers.  Taylor Begin (Haverhill, MA) earned her seventh win of the season in net making two saves.

A Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, MA) shot crossed the goal line at 7:37 to start things off for the Falcons early.  Jacobs received help from Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, MA) on the play with a cross from the right flank.

At the 13 minute mark, Fitchburg upped their edge when Kaitlyn Silva (West Townsend, MA) positioned herself on the post and received a ball off the stick of Rebecca Bush (Littleton, MA) to place in the back of the net.

Five minutes later, after a turnover in the Lasers offensive zone, Fitchburg's Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, MA) sped down the right sideline on a breakaway and sliced a pass across the circle to Jacobs for the Falcons' third goal, at 18:36.

Kelley nearly scored herself moments later when she broke away down field again, this time in a one-on-one with Thornton.  Thornton dove to keep the ball from entering the net for a great save which prevented Fitchburg from advancing further.

Jacobs tallied one more goal before the break to produce a first half hat trick, bringing the score to 4-0 after 35 minutes.

The final mark of the contest was scored in the 54th minute by Mari Roma (Foxborough, MA) off a reverse stick sweep which went high over Thornton's should for the 5-0 win.

Lasell will now prepare for the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament which begins on Sunday, October 30th.  The Lasers, seeded 8th, will be hosted by Castleton State, seeded 1st, in a 4:00 p.m. quarter final contest.
