Women’s Basketball Drops Road Opener to Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team lost their first road game of the year by a score of 91-41 to the Framingham State University Rams on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Rams start their season at 1-0 while the Colonels move to 0-3.

Curry got out to a hot start, as a three by Katie Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) gave the visitors a 5-0 edge two minutes into the action. Another Colonel triple, this time from Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) pushed the lead to 8-2, but Framingham State took 11 of the next 13 points to grab their first lead of the evening at 13-10. The teams traded buckets as the quarter continued, until a layup from Mary Kate O'Day (Berlin, Mass.) with three seconds remaining in the frame sent the Rams to the first break with a 19-15 advantage.

After a closely contested first quarter, the Rams used the second and third stanzas to break the game open, racking up 30 points in each frame. However, it was their defense that helped their lead keep growing. After holding the Colonels to just three points over the first four minutes of the second quarter, Framingham State stretched their lead to 25 at 45-20 after Flannery O'Conner (Amesbury, Mass.) converted a pair of free throws. Kirsten Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) hit a three to halt the Rams' scoring run, but the hosts kept their foot on the gas and took a 49-26 lead into halftime.

The Colonels looked to claw their way back into the ball game, but once again struggled to find the rim, as a layup by Dunn gave Curry their first points of the second half two minutes and 39 seconds into play. The freshman's bucket would account for a third of the Colonels' points in the stanza, as the Rams pushed their advantage to 47 points (79-32) as the third quarter concluded.

Despite the deficit, Curry's defense stood strong in the final period, giving up just 12 points in the quarter. The Colonels got contributions from all three of their freshmen Smiths, with points from Kirsten (3), Katie (2), and Kaitlynn (2). Alexa Galluci (North Stonington, Conn.) also tacked on her first points of the night with a jumper. However, the Rams' lead would stand, as the hosts secured a 91-41 final score in their first game of the season.

In the victory, O'Day led the Rams with 24 points, while Emily Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) registered seven assists. O'Connor collected 10 rebounds off the bench to lead the team. The Colonel offense was headed by Kat. Smith, who turned in 13 points. Kir. Smith and Lillian Gray (Brooksville, Maine) each led the team in helpers with two each, while Dunn was credited with a game-high 11 boards.

Framingham State will continue their schedule by competing in the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament in Waltham, Mass. The Rams' first game will be against the Nichols College Bison at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15. Curry will also head into a tournament, as they hit the road on Friday to visit the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, Conn. The Colonels draw New England College on day one and will get underway at 8:00 p.m.
