Vikings Shutout Beavers for First Win

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State women's soccer secured their first win of the season this afternoon after defeating the Beavers from the University of Maine Farmington by a tally of 2-0. The Vikings' shutout victory boosted their record to 1-2 on the young season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salem's early pressure paid off in the 23rd minute of action when Krysta Zamejtis' (Danvers, Mass.) shot found its way past the Beavers' keeper to give her squad the early 1-0 tilt.
  • Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) turned away the Vikings next three shots before Brenna Paquette (Hudson, N.H.) doubled the Vikings' lead with a goal in the closing ten minutes of the first to send the game into the break with Salem up, 2-0.  
  • The second half would be a defensive stalemate as Gonya turned away four shots, while Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) saved both shots she faced to solidify the 2-0 shutout victory for the Vikings.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Krysta Zamejtis' early goal marked the first of her collegiate career, and the first for the Vikings this season.
  • Ava Guyer's shutout marks the second of her career in the orange and blue.

Salem State women's soccer is back on the road, Wednesday, September 11 when they travel to Dudley, Massachusetts to take on the Nichols College Bison at 3:30 p.m..
