Falcons Soar Past Trailblazers, 65-49

North Adams, Mass. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team defeated the Trailblazers of MCLA, 65-49 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action from the Amsler Center this evening.

How It Happened

1st quarter

MCLA took an 8-2 margin on a three ball from freshman Hannah Mazzeo (Averill Park, N.Y.) before Fitchburg State cut the lead to 10-9 as junior Samantha Maglione (Bolton, Mass.) drained a three pointer. The Falcons would take a 14-12 edge with senior Emma Thomson (York, Maine) connecting a trey, while the Trailblazers knotted the score (14-14) on a Mazzeo layup.

2nd quarter

The Green and Gold regained the lead, 20-18 as Thomson sank another three ball before Fitchburg State extended its' advantage (25-20) on an Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H) and two free-throws by junior Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.). The Falcons continued to push, upping their lead to 32-25 on a Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.) layup, but MCLA chipped the deficit to 32-27 going into the break, as Mazzeo knocked down a layup.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State went on a 10-0 run, capped by a Marazzi three pointer to make the score 45-29, but MCLA answered back as senior Erika Ryan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) notched a bucket. The Falcons closed out the quarter with a free-throw from senior Catherine Coppinger (Boston, Mass.) for the 49-32 edge.

 4th quarter

The Trailblazers chipped away at the lead (49-36) on four straight points by senior Kylah Langston (East Hartford, Conn.), but the Green and Gold responded with a Marazzi basket (51-36). Fitchburg State secured the victory on a jumper from sophomore Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) and a Marazzi three ball, resulting in the 65-49 final.

Inside the Numbers

• Green and Gold were led Marazzi with a game-leading 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals
• Holmes and McDonald added 12 points each for Fitchburg State
• For the Trailblazers, Langston finished with a team-best 15 points and three rebounds
• Ryan chipped in with 14 points for MCLA
• 72nd meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 43-29 all-time when taking on the Trailblazers
• Fitchburg State shot 23-of-64 (35.8%) from the field and (11-for-29) 37.9% from downtown
