SALEM, MA- Salem State snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lasell College Lasers on Thursday in a 3-1 non-league baseball contest which left the Lasers at 10-6 overall this season.
The Vikings led 1-0 for most of the game because of a Chris Cocci (Wakefield, RI) RBI double in the third inning that plated Steve Butkus (Reading, MA).
The run in the third was the only given up by Lasell starter Billy Uberti (Newton, MA), tossing for 7.0 innings while relinquishing seven hits and no walks.
In the top of the 8th, Jacob Salkovitz (Brockton, MA) scored the game-tying run for Lasell after Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA) doubled down the right field line. Salkovitz had a pinch-hit single to reach base and was advanced by an Andrew Pompeo (Hingham, MA) sac bunt.
Salem regained control in the bottom of the same inning when Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) drove in the winning run, scored by Butkus, with a two bagger off of Lasell's relief pitcher Joe McKernan (Bourne, MA). Kane then added cushion to the Vikings lead when he crossed home plate after a Kyle McElvoy (Newburyport, MA) single.
In addition to Salkovitz and Mahoney's hits, the Lasers got base hits from Joshua Sullivan (Rockland, MA), Christopher Pittman (Brockton, MA), and Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA).
Lasell will open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday, April 2nd at Pierce Stadium in Providence, Rhode Island where they will host Johnson & Wales University. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at noon.
