Lightning Strikes Down on Falcons in Non Conference Victory

CHICOPEE, MA - The Women hosted the Fitchburg State Falcons on Saturday afternoon in PIcknelly Arena where they picked up a non conference win, 67-56.

How it Happened

The Blazers kicked off the night with a 7-0 lead over the Fitchburg State Falcons, with four points from junior Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT). Quickly the Falcons flipped the script and made an easy 8 point come back creating a one point lead over the Blazers with four minutes left in the quarter. For the first 10 minutes of play the game was tied up twice and the lead changed three times ending with both teams sitting at 11 points to head into the second quarter. The Lihgtning started off the game hot from the foul line hitting 5-6 (83.3%) free opportunites, but were not having the same success from the 3Pt-line shooting 0-7 for the first quarter.

Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, MA) opened up the second quarter with a tip in off of a recovered offensive board to grab the lead back for the Blazers. Within the second 10 minutes of action their was a total of four lead changes with both teams knocking down shots. The Lightning were able to attain 12 boards over the Falcons 5 in the second and cashed in 19 points to surpase the Falcons 14 points in the second. Johnston was able to knock down the first three pointer of the night for the Blazers, and the team found more success from the field througout this quarter, with continued luck from the charity stripe. Elms now leading 30-25 at the half.

In the third quarter the Falcons were able to close the gap and turn the game into a one posession battle at 36-34, but the Blazers did not slow down and went on a 10-2 point run to build a generous lead. As the quarter played out the Blazers emerged a triumphant lead of 53-42 heading into the fourth. 

The Blazers never let up and held onto the lead throughout the final quarter denying the Falcons a chance of every closing the gap of more than five points. With both teams putting up 14 points in the final 10 minutes of action, the Lightning were able to secure the non conference victory over the Falcons, 67-56 for the final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Mikayler patch recorded a double double with 10 points and 11 boards.
  • Rahmia Johnston cashed in 3-6 from the 3PT-line and went 5-6 from the foul line putting up 20 points for the Blazers
  • The Blazers recorded 54 boards and went 18-24 (75%) from the foul line.
