Women's Volleyball Falls in Close Battle with Mass. Maritime

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's volleyball team was defeated in four sets (27-25, 25-23, 28-30, 27-25) in non-conference play against Mass. Maritime Tuesday night at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

After going down 6-0 to open the first set of the match, the Colonels fought their way back into the set, taking a 14-13 lead off a kill by Lauryn Gedeon (Holbrook, Mass.). Ultimately, Mass. Maritime retook the lead to win their first set of the season.

In set two, the opponents went back and forth until a kill by Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.) started a four-point scoring run, which included two straight kills by Natalie Cloutier (Litchfield, N.H.) to give the Colonels a 14-9 lead. The Buccaneers came back again to win set two.

After going down by four points to start set three, kills by Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) and Savas got the Curry offense going, leading to a 7-6 advantage for the home team. From there, the lead changed multiple times until a five-point run put Curry on top, 14-11. With the score tied at 28-28, back-to-back kills by Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) won the set for the Colonels.

The Colonels jumped out to a commanding 7-3 lead to start set four, prompting a timeout from Mass. Maritime. The Buccaneers once again fought back to regain the lead and come out on top.

Guzman and Oscar-Phoenix both finished with 10 kills, while Sydney DeCarvalho (Hope, R.I.) had 18 digs.

Curry College (3-3) returns to action on Thursday (9/14) with a non-conference road match at Framingham State University beginning at 6 p.m.
