Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season with 75-54 Win over Worcester State

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University women's basketball closed the regular season and secured the second seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament with a 75-54 victory over Worcester State this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Logan Gymnasium.     

THE BASICS: 

-Scores:  Framingham State 75, Worcester State 54 

-Records: Framingham State (17-5, 9-3 MASCAC), Worcester State (10-15, 6-6 MASCAC)  

- Location: Logan Gymnasium Framingham, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Lancers led 9-4 four minutes into the game after a putback from Sarah Blomgren, but the Rams scored five straight capped by a Katty Haidul layup to take a 10-9 lead. The two teams traded baskets and Worcester State led 14-12 after one. 

  • The Rams started the second quarter with an 8-1 run capped by capped by a Gwendolyn Carpenter layup to take a 20-15 lead. The Lancers countered with four straight cutting the deficit to one (20-19). The Rams led by as many as four in the second before taking a 28-26 lead into the half. 

  • The Rams opened the third quarter with an 8-2 spurt and led 34-28 with 7:30 on the clock.  

  • The Rams led 38-30 before the Lancers rattled off a 9-2 run closing the gap to 40-39 with just under five to play. Back-to-back layups by Carpenter and Katherine Haselton pushed the lead back to 44-39, but Worcester closed the gap to three (44-41).  

  • The Rams closed the third and started the fourth quarter with a 16-2 run capped by a Kelsey Yelle bucket to open up a 60-43 lead. The Rams maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the fourth quarter.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams were led by 25 points and eight rebounds from Haidul. Haidul connected on10-of-11 from the floor and added an assist and two blocks. 

  • Haselton finished the game with 17 points, four rebounds and six assists for the Rams, while Yelle finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds. 

  • The Lancers were led by 18 points from Erin Gallella. Gallella connected on 7-of-14 from the floor and added three rebounds and two steals. 

  • Julia Hamel chipped in with a double double off the bench as she scored 13 and grabbed 12 boards. 

  • Prior to the game, the Rams honored guard Casey McAuliffe as part of Senior Day

Both teams are back in action next week in the MASCAC Women's Basketball Tournament with seedings and matchups announced later today.
