Softball Opens Season with 7-1 Victory over Nichols Before Falling to Clarkson

Clermont, Fla. - The Framingham State University softball team opened the 2023 season this morning and split a pair of games, defeating Nichols College 7-1 before falling 8-2 to Clarkson at the Spring Games.     

THE BASICS: 

-Scores:  Framingham State 7, Nichols 1 
Clarkson 8, Framingham State 2 

-Records: Framingham State (1-1), Nichols (0-1), Clarkson (3-)  

- Location: The Spring Games Clermont, Fla.  

FSU-Nichols:  

  • The Rams grabbed the early lead against the Bison, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Brooke Grassia delivered an RBI single and Gwendolyn Carpenter followed with an RBI single of her own. Kelsey McGuill plated the third run when she grounded out and Angelina Lynch added a sacrifice fly to cap the frame. 

  • Makayla Rooney walked to lead off the third and came around to score on an RBI triple from Grassia pushing the lead to 5-0. 

  • Nichols plated their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, but the Rams added two more in the top of the seventh to reach the final margin. 

  • Grassia finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Rooney finished the game with two hits and three runs scored. 

  • Ally Moran earned the victory in the circle going five innings and allowing one earned run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. 

 

FSU-Clarkson 

  • Clarkson took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first and four in the top of the second. 

  • The Rams got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ally Moran singled with two outs and moved to third when Makayla Rooney reached on an error. Brooke Grassia followed with an RBI single to second. Gwendolyn Carpenter reached on a throwing error allowing Rooney to score. 

  • Clarkson tacked on two more to reach the final margin. 

  • Grassia finished the game going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Angelina Lynch went 2-for-3 at the plate. 

  • Olyvia Mendonca took the loss in the circle going one inning plus allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits with a walk. Rylynn Witek went six innings of relief allowing two earned runs with a walk and eight strikeouts.
