Softball Snares Win in Season Opener

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State junior outfielder Jordyn Lummus drove in a pair of runs with a double, and starting pitcher Stephanie Scoville limited Alfred State to just three hits as Westfield posted a 4-1 softball win over the Pioneers in Owls first game of the season at the Gene Cusic Classic in Naples, Fla.

Westfield dropped game two on the day to Wisconsin-Superior by a 7-0 final score.

In the opener, the Pioneers got on the board first with an RBI groundout in the top of the first inning, but that was the lone run they would get off of Scoville (1-0), who tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out five and walking just one in earning the win.

Lummus drove in Megan Metzger and Lexus Mastromatteo with the double in the second inning to provide all the offense the Owls would need.

Westfield added an insurance run on a sac fly from Annelyse Rivera in the third innng, and then in the sixth, Lummus reached on a fielder's choice and eventually came around to score on an error later in the inning.   Abby Higgins had a pair of hits for the Owls.

Pioneers (0-2) starter Audrey Farrell (0-1) threw a complete game, scattering 10 hits, walking three and striking out two while surrendering three earned runs.

In the nightcap, Superior (5-2) starter Tayler Kramer shut the Owls down on two hits, walking two and striking out five to earn the win.

Sabrina Testa had two hits for the Owls.   Janna Jose (L, 0-1) started and worked two innings in taking the losse.

Katherine Canty worked three innings and and Gianna Conte tossed an inning in relief.

The Yellow Jackets stung four four runs in the first, the big blow a 2-run triple from Ellie Macal.  Kraemer helped her own cause with two hits, three runs scored, and an RBI.

Westfield (1-1) is back in action on Monday morning with a 9:00 a.m. start against New York University at North Collier Park in Naples, then face SUNY Cobleskill at 11:00 a.m.
