Bingham's Bomb Powers Owls Sweep

Sarah Bingham's leadoff home run in the top of the seventh inning sparked a four-run rally to power Westfield State to 5-2 win over Mitchell College in the second game of a split doubleheader in Naples, Fla. on Wednesday afternoon.

Westfield won the first game of the day 14-3 over Lesley University improving Westfield State to 4-2 on the spring trip.

Bingham lined a home run to center field to tie the game at 2-2.  Westfield got the go-ahead run when Christina Ciampa base hit Meredith Higgins, then the Owls scraped together a pair of insurance runs with a passed ball and a bases-loaded walk for the final margin.

Bingham finished with three hits and two rbi in the game.  Jodyn Lummus also had three hits and scored a run for the Owls.   Pitcher Stephanie Scoville (W, 3-0) went the distance for the Owls, scattering 11 hits, striking out one and walking none.

Emily Renyolds (L, 1-2) pitched 6-1/3 innings for the Mariners, yieldind 13 hits and was charged with all five runs.

Wesftield's bats had another big inning in them, as the Owls erupted for 11 runs in the third inning against Lesley, on the way to a 14-3 win over the Lynx in a game shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule.

Sarah Hough waved the big bat for the Owls in the opener for Westfield, with three hits in three at bats and drove in four runs.  Sabrina Testa had a pair of hits and Meredith Higgins drove in two runs with a double.

Westfield's Katherine Canty started and tossed three innings, allowing one run in garnering her first win of the season.

Started Emma Hodgkins took the loss for Lesley.

Westfield is back in action on Thursday morning with games against Emerson and Wilmington, Ohio.
