Anna Maria Swept Away By Mass Maritime In Season Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, MA - Anna Maria College women's lacrosse opened up their season against the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) Buccaneers but were flooded by the Buccaneers offense in a 16-0 loss Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • MMA wasted no time (29:05) as Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, MA) scored off a Alyssa Blumenthal (Braintree, MA) feed to quickly make it 1-0. Blumenthal went on to score again for the Buccaneers just a couple minutes later (27:16) and tacked on the next three goals at 26:01, 19:53, and 17:31 respectively. For the remainder of the half, MMA scored six more times courtesey of Nora McLaughlin (Quincy, MA), Sullivan, Heather Seggelin (Sharon, MA), Cammi Balentine (Haverhill, MA) (twice), and Bluementhal respectively to give the Buccaneers a 11-0 lead headed into halftime.
  • Anna Maria had a chance to get on the board a little over 10 minutes in the half (10:24) when Sierra Green (Lewiston, ME) had a free position shot but unfortunately was turned away by MMA goalie, Aviva Beringhause (Providence, RI).
  • The Buccanners continued their offensive output when they tacked on five more goals in the half via Blumenthal, Anna Deely (Barnstable, MA) (three times), and Grace Calvert (Winsor, MA) at 27:13, 25:12, 22:21, 15:08, and 11:25 respectively.
  • Similar to the first half, the squad had another free position attempt for a scoring chance when Ashley Rufo (Pittsfield, MA) drew the foul but could not find the back of the net from a save by Beringhause.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Emma Walsh (Dracut, MA) drew the start for the AMCATS and recorded 11 saves. Ashley Sheehan (Medford, MA) took over with 11:02 to play in the second and made one save.
  • For the Buccaneers, Beringhause stopped two shots on the afternoon.
  • Eight different Anna Maria student-athletes were tied for the team-high in caused turnovers with one; Bryce McDonald (Dracut, MA), Jenna Grande (Whitman, MA), Julia Ramos (Orange, MA), Cassie Micklesavage (Pottstown, PA), Rufo, Nicole Maffei (Wayne, NJ), Alice Yokbaskas (Farmingdale, ME), and Walsh.

Anna Maria has some time off before they hit the road against Dean College on Wednesday, March 4 at 3 PM. MMA continues their homestand taking on Maritime (NY) on Friday, March 6 at 7 PM.
