Softball Sweeps MCLA in First Games Post-Pandemic

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Junior Farrah Adam rapped out four hits, including three doubles, and Emily Arredondo threw a shutout in game one, as Westfield State University swept MCLA in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday.

After a 375-day hiatus from intercollegiate competition due to the worldwide COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the Owls showed little rust with a 9-0 win in game one.   Arredondo (1-0) tossed six shutout innings while striking out six to earn the win.

Westfield ended the game early via the eight-run rule, as Meghan Doyle's RBI double plated a pair of runs for the decisive margin.   Doyle finished 3-4 with three rbi; Adam was 2-4 with a double and three runs scored, and Arredondo helped her own cause at the plate with two hits, including a two-rbi double. Samantha Feinstein (0-1) started and took the pitching loss for the Trailblazers.  Justina Pardi had a pair of hits including a double.

In the nightcap, Adam rapped a pair of doubles with a run scored and an RBI in a 6-3 Owls' win. Lindsay Cordopatri reached base three times, stole four bases and scored a pair of runs.    Freshman pitcher Stephanie Scoville (1-0) earned the win in her first career start, allwing just one earned run in five innings while striking out four and walking none.

MCLA's Morgan Watson took the pitching loss. Pardi had a pair of hits including a double. 

Westfield State is 2-0 with the pair of wins, while MCLA drops to 0-2.   Westfield State will be back in action on Friday with a pair of conference games at Framingham State.
