SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Laura Young and Jordan Turcotte combined to score 11 goals as Salem State University came back from an 11-9 deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team 14-11 on Tuesday night, in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
The back-and-forth game included three ties and two lead changes -- the last coming with 8:18 remaining, when Young fed Turcotte to put the visiting Vikings back in the lead for good at 12-11. Young and Turcotte added insurance goals at the 6:09 and 1:07 marks to preserve the Vikings' fourth straight win.
Salem State (8-2) took early leads of 2-0, 3-1, and 4-2, before Mount Holyoke tied it up at 4-4 with a late first-quarter goal by first-year Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.), followed by junior Emi Bisson's (Chester, Conn.) free-position goal two minutes into the second quarter.
Young scored three straight goals for the Vikings to give them a game-high three-goal lead at 7-4 with 6:00 left in the half.
Mount Holyoke pushed back with two goals before halftime by junior Elle Mader (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.), then extended its momentum into the third quarter, making it a 5-0 run with goals by sophomore Mackenzie Hillman (Newington, Conn.), Mader and junior Marielle Welch (Silver Spring, Md.), for a 9-7 Lyons lead.
Salem State closed out the third quarter with back-to-back goals by Young and Turcotte to tie the game at 9-9 heading into the final period.
In spite Lyons assumed another two-goal lead with back-to-back woman-down goals after they were issued a pair of yellow cards, with Bisson scoring unassisted with 13:11 to go and Hillman following at the 12:07 mark on Mader's second assist of the game to make it 11-9.
Salem State goalie Nora Bradley saved two shots by Welch on back-to-back possessions to set up Viking goals by Turcotte and Aislinn Bennett, tying the game again at 11-11 with 9:15 to go. Turcotte scored again less than a minute later, and then Young made it 13-11 in the visitors' favor after Bradley made a save on Bisson.
After a Mount Holyoke timeout, Spaulding took one shot that hit the post, and a second that was saved by Bradley. A Lyons turnover with under two minutes to go was converted by the Vikings into Turcotte's fourth and final goal to make it 14-11 with 1:07 left in the game.
Young finished with six goals and two assists and Turcotte added five goals and two assists for Salem State. Bradley had 13 saves and Maria Rogers caused three turnovers.
Bisson led Mount Holyoke (3-7) with three goals, while Mader added two goals and two assists and Hillman contributed a pair of goals. Spaulding and Phillips had one goal and one assist apiece.
First-year defender Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alberta) had a season-high five caused turnovers for Mount Holyoke and first-year Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) made 11 saves.
Mount Holyoke plays only NEWMAC opponents the rest of the way, beginning Saturday at home against MIT.
