Blazers Fall to Owls

CHICOPEE, MA – The Elms College women's volleyball team dropped a five set thriller at home on Thursday afternoon to the Westfield State Owls. The Blazers lost on set scores of (25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 14-25 and 6-15). The loss drops Elms to 1-4 overall and 0-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

How It Happened

The Owls took a slight edge to begin the contest, but with Westfield leading 2-7, the Blazers recorded four straight points, to go up 6-8 to lessen the gap. Moments later, the Blazers strung together seven straight points to go up 20-17. Elms College carried the momentum throughout the rest of the set, Jaylen Holman (Las Cruces, NM) scoring the final kill of the set to win 25-20.

The two teams traded points in the early moments of the second set. With the score tied at 11-11, Elms was able to rattle off four straight points. Westfield was able to respond minutes later with a run of their own to tie it back up (16-16). The Owls were able to close out the set on a 3-9 run.

In the middle set, neither team could establish any momentum, as both teams traded points. With the set tied 12-12, the Blazers recorded five straight points. Elms continued to apply the pressure on the Owls, and they outscored the Pilgrims 8-7 to take the set 25-19.

Westfield opened up the fourth set with a 3-10 lead. Elms slowly chipped away at the deficit but never fully took the lead. The Owls cap the set in a 14-25 win.

In the decisive fifth set, Westfield was able to jump out to an early 7-2 lead. After the Blazers picked up their fourth point of the set (4-11), the owls started to pull away down the stretch as they won the fifth set 6-15

Inside the Numbers

The Blazers were led by Jaylen Holman (Las Cruces, NM) who registered a double-double with 32 assists and 15 digs. 

Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa (Boca Raton, FL) led the team with 19 kills, Laura Jensen (Terrance, CA) followed closely behind with 16 kills.
