Softball Brooms Golden Bears; Win Sixth Straight

WESTFIELD, Mass. –  Westfield State pulled out a pair of one run wins, getting past local rival Western New England University by scores of 5-4 in game one, and 6-5 in eight innings in game 2 at Golden Bear Stadium on Wednesday.

Westfield improves to 16-6 overall this season while winning their sixth straight game, while WNE is now 14-10.

In the opener, Westfield's Sarah Bingham launched a three- run homer in the third inning to stake Westfield to a 3-1 lead.

The Golden Bears got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double from Kailey Carrano.

Westfield extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth, as Abby Higgins rapped a single to right field that scored two runs.

Westfield starter Stephanie Scoville (W, 8-1) worked around an RBI ground out and a squeeze bunt in the seventh to close out her eighth win of the season.  Jordyn Lummus stayed hot at the plate with a pair of hits.

Golden Bears starter Riley Kane took the pitching loss, but was 3-3 at the plate with a double and an rbi.

In the nightcap, the game went to extra innings tied at 4-4, but the Owls tacked on two runs in the top half of the the 8th to escape with a 6-5 win.

Westfield took advantage of seven WNE errors, in the game, including three in the final inning.  Christina Ciampa reached on an error that scored Sarah Bingham,  and later scored on a passed ball that gave the Owls a 6-4 lead.   Scoville came on in relief to close out the win and earn her second save of the season.  Gianna Conte earned the win in relief.    Megan Metzger was the lone repeat hitter for the Owls.
