NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Junior outside hitter Madeline Barton had 20 kills with a .400 attack percentage to go with 10 digs, leading the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Thursday night.
Mount Holyoke stands at 3-0 for the first time since 2017. The Lyons dropped the opening set to the Trailblazers (0-4), their first set loss of the young season, but swept the next three for a 21-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-18 final score.
Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had the sixth 20-kill match of her career and the 20th double-double of her career. The 20 kills represented 44.4 percent of Mount Holyoke's total, and Barton's efficiency paced the Lyons to a .179 team attack percentage.
Senior Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) posted nine kills and 12 digs and junior Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) added seven kills with two blocks. Sophomore Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) led the Lyons in digs with 22. Junior Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) passed out 33 assists, and first-year Annika Lackstrom (New London, N.H.) had a team-high five blocks.
MCLA broke out of a 17-17 tie in the first set with an 8-4 run to take the early lead. The Trailblazers pulled out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Mount Holyoke overtook the lead at 8-7 and never trailed the rest of the way, with MCLA closing the gap to one point at 14-13, 21-20, 22-21, and 23-22. A Barton kill followed by a bad MCLA set had the match tied at one set apiece.
Mount Holyoke dominated the third set with 11 kills and one attack error on 29 swings (.345), led by Barton's five kills on six attacks (.833).
After trading leads early in the fourth set, Mount Holyoke took over the lead for good at 10-9. A block by Barton and Rimando made it 11-9, back-to-back kills by Barton pushed the lead to 14-10, and a block by Lackstrom made it 15-10 after an MCLA timeout. The lead opened up to seven points at 24-17 on a Berclaz kill.
The Lyons will host Amherst College on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30pm in their home opener.
