Falcons Skate Past Ice Hockey in MASCAC Action

 

Fitchburg, Mass.- The Fitchburg State ice hockey team skated to a 3-1 victory over the Rams of Framingham State University this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Wallace Civic Center.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Green and Gold took a 1-0 lead late in the first period. First-year Gene Bouthiette (Enfield, Conn.) collected a loose puck in front of the Rams netminder senior Greg Harney (East Haven, Conn.) and rifled a shot top-shelf for his second goal of the season.
  • Senior Christopher Vicario (Cranston, RI) and freshman Adam Kusior (Tecumseh, Ont.) had the assists on the goal. Fitchburg goaltender junior Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) has nine saves in frame.
  • Framingham State evened the score midway through the second period with a shorthanded tally.  Sophomore Zach Bettmeng (Sioux Falls, SD) intercepted a Falcon pass on the blue line and found classmate Jacob Garman (Anchorage, AK) for his third goal on the year.
  • The Falcons moved ahead 2-1 with just under four minutes remaining in the period. Freshman Wyatt Wilmshurst (Massena, NY) notched his third goal of the season when he corralled a free puck in the slot and deposited in the back of the Rams net.
  • Freshman Hunter Fortin (Westerville, Ohio) added an insurance goal for the Falcons at 10:13 of the third period en route to the 3-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Fitchburg State held a 51-29 margin in shots
  • Fitchburg State finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage, while Framingham State was 0-for-6 on the power-play
  • McGrath stopped 28 shots for the Falcons, while his counterpart Harney made 48 saves in the loss for the Rams

Falcons travel to Westfield State on Saturday evening, starting at 5:35 PM. Rams will host Salem State on the same day with a 12:50 PM puck-drop.
