Baseball Blanks Mass. Maritime Twice in Doubleheader Sweep

Buzzards Bay, Mass.  – The Framingham State University baseball team received a solid pair of pitching performances from Anthony Panza and Scott Nosky as the Rams swept a doubleheader this afternoon with Mass. Maritime at Hendy Field.  The Rams took the opener 9-0 before holding one for a 1-0 victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game 1 -

  • In the opener, the Rams grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andrew Caulfield.
  • The game would remain 1-0 in favor of the Rams until the top of the fourth inning.  Robert Johnston plated a run with a double down the leftfield line and Matt Shaver scampered home from third on wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.
  • Anthony Panza cruised along on the mound for the Rams en route to his first victory of the season on the hill. Panza went six innings and allowed just three hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
  • The Rams tacked on two runs apiece in the top of the sixth and seventh to reach the final differential.
  • Josh Jezouit tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Rams in the seventh.
  • Caulfield finished the game 2-for-4 for the Rams with a home run and four RBI, while Johnston finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and two RBI while walking three times.
  • John Teehan took the loss for Buccaneers on the mound going five innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts and eight walks.

Game 2 -

  • In game two, the Rams Scott Nosky and the Buccaneers Mason Ashburn were engaged in a pitcher's duel with the game scoreless after three innings.
  • The Rams got on the board with the game's only run in the top of the fourth inning.  Johnston started the inning with a single and moved to third on a Caulfield double.  Johnston was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a fly ball to right, but Ryan Boyle followed with a single to right scoring Caulfield for the 1-0 lead.
  • Nosky earned the shutout, complete game victory on the mound going seven innings allowing just two hits with nine strikeouts and a walk.  Nosky retired 12 Bucs in a row until a walk in the sixth inning, but a strikeout ended that frame.
  • Ashburn took the loss going six innings allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts.

The Rams are home next Friday when they host Bridgewater State for a MASCAC doubleheader at the NEBC beginning at noon.
