Softball Defeats Suffolk Twice in the Battle of the Rams

Framingham, Mass.  – The Framingham State University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Suffolk University this afternoon at Maple Street Field.  Framingham State took the first game coming from behind 2-1 and then took game two by a score of 8-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game 1 -

  • In the opener, the FSU Rams took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single to center by sophomore Zoe Smyth (Cambridge, Mass.).
  • Suffolk tied the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to left center off the bat of sophomore Caitlin Murphy.
  • The FSU Rams took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Junior Laela Pepin (Acushnet, Mass.) ripped a single to left center plating senior Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) with the game-winning run.
  • The Suffolk Rams threatened in the top of the seventh with a runner on and one out, but sophomore Ally Moran (Wilmington, Mass.) was able to record a strikeout and ground out to end the game.
  • Moran earned the victory for the Rams improving to 2-0 on the young season as she tossed a complete game allowing one earned run on four hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk.
  • Senior Contance Phelan took the loss for Suffolk going five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts.

 

Game 2 -

  • The Suffolk Rams took the early lead in game two.  Murphy led off the game with a triple to right and then came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of senior Ashley Zuilla.
  • Framingham State tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI sacrifice fly from Desrochers.
  • The FSU Rams took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third.  With the bases loaded, freshman Payton Ceglarski (Taunton, Mass.) worked a walk and then senior Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Rams added three more in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by freshman Mercedes Jimenez (Cambridge, Mass.), a bases loaded hit by pitch and Jimenez scored on a wild pitch.
  • Suffolk got a run back in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Ira Boci, before Framingham State added two more in the bottom of the inning including another RBI single from Jimenez.
  • Suffolk capped the scoring in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs to reach the final margin.
  • Jimenez finished game two 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, while sophomore Gwendolyn Carpenter (Ashley Falls, Mass.) and junior Laela Pepin (Acushnet, Mass.) also recorded two hits apiece.
  • Freshman Shannon Ward (Newport, RI) earned the victory on the mound going six and two thirds allowing four runs, three earned on 10 hits.
  • Kennedy Reyes took the loss for Suffolk going four and two thirds allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a pair of games at Maple Street Field beginning at 12 p.m.
