NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team bested Salem State 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the MCLA Classic.
The Lions climb to 2-0-0 on the year with the win while the Vikings sink to 1-1-0 overall.
Eastern Nazarene bagged the match's lone tally in the waning moments of the first half. Senior Denser Martinez (Cumberland, R.I.) netted his first collegiate goal with one second remaining in the opening frame. Junior Bryan Vargas (San Jose, Costa Rica) delivered his second assist of the season on Martinez's 45th minute strike.
The Lions managed six shots in the first period while Salem State attempted eight shots.
Late in the second stanza, Eastern Nazarene went down to 10 men on the pitch after an 88th minute red card. The short-handed Lions staved off the Vikings offensive attack to secure their second-consecutive victory.
Eastern Nazarene concluded the contest with 12 shots while Salem State finished with 14 shots and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks earned.
Goalkeeper Antonio Soto Valente (Maracaibo, Venezuela) racked up six saves in his first start of the season.
