Baseball Walks Off with 9-8 10-Inning Game Two Victory in Split with Fitchburg State

Framingham, Mass.  – The Framingham State University baseball team plated four runs in the bottom of the tenth inning including a walk off two run double from senior Bobby Higgins as the Rams defeated Fitchburg State 9-8 in 10 innings in game two of a doubleheader at Bowditch Field this afternoon.  The Falcons took the opener by a score of 7-4 for the split.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game 1 -

  • In the opener, the Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.  Zachary May plated a run with a single through the right side and Cameron Donahue followed with a two run bloop double to left.
  • A single run in the top of the third on a Johan Asencio double pushed the lead to 4-0.
  • The Falcons added three more in the top of the fifth on a Jamie Velez two run double and Nicholas Cordeau RBI single.
  • The Rams got four back in the bottom of the frame. Chris Ianetta started the scoring scampering home from third on the back end of a double steal.  Ryan Boyle plated a run with a ground out and Andrew Caulfield followed with an RBI single. Nicholas Simonenko capped the inning with an RBI single cutting the gap to 7-4.
  • Matthew Ambrosino and Cameron Donahue combined to toss two and a third innings of scoreless relief to secure the victory for the Falcons.
  • Alec Hanney earned the win going four and two thirds allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits.
  • John DeCoste took the loss for the Rams going three innings and allowing four earned runs.

Game 2 -

  • In game two, the Falcons grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.
  • The score would hold till the Rams plated five in the bottom of the second to take a 5-3 lead.  The big blow in the inning was a controversial three run homer by Higgins that hugged the foul pole in right field.
  • The Falcons tied the game in the top of the sixth as they scored on a wild pitch and a Jamie Velez RBI single.
  • The Rams threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second, but the Falcons worked out of the inning
  • The Falcons retook the lead in the top of the 10th with three runs.  Jackson Vail plated the go ahead run with a bloop center to left and an error in the Rams infield allowed two more runs to cross the plate.
  • The Rams led off the bottom of the 10th with a single from Michael Ryan who moved to second on a balk.  An RBI single from Ianetta plated Ryan.  The Rams then proceeded to load the bases with two outs.  Andrew Caulfield was hit by a pitch pulling the Rams within one setting the stage for Higgins' two run double that secured the come from behind victory.
  • Higgins drove in five runs in the game for the Rams, while Caulfield plated a pair.
  • Erik Zine earned the victory for the Rams going a scoreless third of an inning in relief.
  • Adam Kirsch took the loss for the Falcons going two and two thirds allowing four earned runs on four hits.

The Rams are back in action on Friday when they host Salem State at 2 p.m., while the Falcons host Worcester State on Friday at 1 p.m.
