Lummus Homers Twice as Owls Pluck Falcons in Doubleheader

WESTFIELD, Mass. –  Westfield State sophomore OF Jordyn Lummus (Pittsfield, Mass.) hit a pair of home runs in game 1 and added a pair of hits in game 2 as the Owls swept a MASCAC doubleheader from Fitchburg State by scores of 4-3 and 7-3.
 
The Owls are now 12-6 overall and grab a share of first place in the league with a 2-0 record.  Fitchburg drops to 2-13 and 0-2 MASCAC.
 
Westfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener, with Sarah Bingham doubling and later scoring on a double steal in the second, and Alyssa Clark added a solo home run in the fourth inning.
 
Fitchburg answered with a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but then Lummus launched solo shots in the fifth and seventh inning to give Westfield a 4-1 lead.
 
Westfield starter Katherine Canty (W, 5-1) worked around trouble in the seventh, yielding a 2-run double to Molly Grass before retiring the side.   Canty allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out three.
 
Fitchburg started Sarah Cahill (L, 1-5) struck out 10, allowing six hits and four earned runs in tossing a complete game.
 
In game 2, Westfield jumped out  to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the falcons battled back to tied the game 3-3 with one in the bottom half of the inning and two in the third.
 
The Owls got back to back RBI doubles from Abby Higgins and Clark in the top of the fourth to get a 5-3 lead, before Sabrina Testa blasted a 2-run home run in the seventh inning for the 7-3 final score.
 
Lummus, Clark, and Mia Alfonso each had two hits in the nightcap.   Westfield starter Stephanie Scoville (W, 6-1) went the distance, allowing eight hits, three earned runs, and struck out eight while walking none.
 
Starter Mackenzie Leveille (L, 0-4) took the loss, as the Owls chased her in the fourth inning after allowing five earned runs.  Grass added a pair of doubles and an RBI for the Falcons.
 
The Owls are part of a four-way tie atop the league standings after the opening set of games.  Westfield will next host Mass Maritime in a MASCAC doubleheader on Friday, with a 3:00 p.m. start time.
