Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Fitchburg State, 16-11

EAST BOSTON – A second-half frenzy by the Falcons let the visitor's comeback and takedown Suffolk women's lacrosse, 16-11, Saturday afternoon at James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk took a 5-3 lead after the first quarter. Kaitlyn Boyce opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game as she converted a free position attempt. The Falcons responded 39 seconds later to level the playing field before Zoe Peckham and Ally Colburn both found the back of the cage to pad the blue-and-gold's cushion to a pair, 3-1.  

Two more Suffolk strikes were sandwiched in between Fitchburg goals to keep the two-goal gap, 5-3, at the end of the opening quarter. 

The Falcons flew out of the huddle with five unanswered to put the blue-and-gold in an 8-5 hole. The Rams responded with five straight scores of their own to jump ahead, 10-8, at halftime. Colburn and Jessie Le scored two each in that stretch and Julia Dickinson added one.  

Two quick goals by Fitchburg in the first 2:14 of the third quarter leveled the playing field at 10-all.  

A man-up marker by Peckham, her second goal of the day, regained the advantage for Suffolk at the 11:53 mark of the third, 11-10.

From there, the Falcons put away to goals in the final six minutes of third quarter and the Rams found themselves trailing 12-11.  

The fourth quarter was all Fitchburg with four consecutive strikes for the 16-11 final.  

GOALIE LOG

  • Charlotte Guziejka had 10 saves in the setback. 
  • Dakin Kovatch made 12 saves in the victory.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Colburn contributed five goals and one assist. 
  • Peckham provided two goals and two helpers.
  • Le logged two goals.
  • Dickinson registered one goal and two assists. 
  • Boyce tallied one goal and one assist, caused three turnovers and grabbed four ground balls. 
  • Wood added one assist and three caused turnovers. 
  • Eliza Bryant won five draw controls. 
  • Lauren woods and Kate Carlson scooped up three draw controls each.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Peckham tied a career-high four points and set a personal-best two assists. 
  • Peckham (11g, 4a), Dickinson (14g, 14a) and Colburn (27g, 10a) have all produced points in every game this season. 
  • Boyce and Wood both handed out the first assists of their career. 
  • Boyce notched a goal and an assist in the same game for the first time in her collegiate career.
  • Colburn notched a personal-best five goals. She has produced a hat trick in six straight games. 

WHAT'S NEXT?
Suffolk hits the road Monday, March 24 when it visits Rhode Island College for a 4:00 p.m. rescheduled game.
