RECORDS: Suffolk (3-0) | Salem State (0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Salem State took control early as it led by double figures, 19-9, after the first frame.
An even second stanza where Suffolk outscored SSU, 11-8, pulled the Rams within seven, 27-20, at halftime.
The blue-and-gold built its comeback in the third as it poured in the first eight points out of the intermission to flip things in its favor. The buckets came from four different players in Colby Guinta, Jordan Moreau, Allison Bono and Amanda DeAngelis.
Five quick points by the Vikings forced Suffolk to play catchup once again. The Rams' upperclassmen took over and went on a 9-0 run. DeAngelis was responsible for the first six points of the stretch that was capped off by a trey from Aisling Crowley that made it 37-32 Rams with 4:33 left in the quarter.
Suffolk managed to hang onto the advantage and took a 49-47 edge into the final quarter of regulation.
The Rams extended their cushion to as many as eight, 60-52, with 4:49 left on the clock.
Salem State would not go down without a fight as they put up nine unanswered to sneak in front, 61-60, with 2:17 to go.
The lead flipped flopped and the score evened twice over the final few minutes with the last at 66-all to force the extra session.
See-saw action carried into the overtime. After five lead exchanges a pair of freebies by Guinta at the 40-second mark sent Suffolk ahead, 74-72.
Moreau made the front end of a two-shot trip to the line to pad the margin to three at the 19-second mark thankfully because Abuk Teng sunk a layup eight seonds later to keep things interesting.
Out of a full Suffolk timeout, the Vikings gambled with the foul game and sent Moreau back to the charity stripe. This time the junior went 2-for-2 to extend the three, back to three, 77-74.
Salem State used a timeout of its own to advance the ball and Teng managed to get a shot up from down to go for the tie. The attempt was off the mark and the Rams walked away with the victory.
