Softball Opens MASCAC Play with Sweep of Westfield State

Framingham, Mass.  – The Framingham State University softball team defeated Westfield State University by scores of 7-1 and 6-2 to complete the sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader this afternoon at Maple Street Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game 1 -

  • In the opener, Westfield State grabbed the early lead on an RBI double off the bat of senior Madison Philbrook in the top of the second inning.
  • The Rams grabbed the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the third on a two run homer to left off the bat of senior Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.).
  • The Rams extended the lead to 4-1 with two more in the bottom of the fourth on sacrifice flies from sophomores Ally Moran (Wilmington, Mass.) and Zoe Smyth (Cambridge, Mass.).
  • Junior Laela Pepin (Acushnet, Mass.) delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and the Rams added two more in the bottom of the sixth including an RBI single from sophomore Jacqui Schwalm (Billerica, Mass.) to reach the final margin.
  • Moran earned the victory in the circle for the Rams going the distance allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts.
  • Emily Arredondo took the loss going six innings allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts.

Game 2 -

  • In game two, the Owls once again got on the board first on a two run triple off the bat of junior Farrah Adam in the top of the first inning.
  • The Rams cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single to left from Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.).
  • The Rams struck for five runs in the bottom of the second opening up a 6-2 lead. Sophomore Grace Swanson (Lincoln, RI) knotted the game at 2-2 with an RBI single.  Sophomores Gwendolyn Carpenter (Ashley Falls, Mass.) and Shannon Ward (Newport, RI) followed with RBI singles, while Pepin drove in a pair with a base hit.
  • The Owls had runners on in the sixth and seventh inning, but Ward was able to record the final outs to end the threat and secure the victory.
  • Ward went the distance to earn the victory in the circle allowing two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
  • Brenna Welch took the loss for the Owls going two innings allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday when they meet for a pair of games at Westfield State.
