WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  UMass Dartmouth's Jillian Prout's (Dartmouth, Mass.) first goal of the season was a big one, as she scored with 4:45 left in overtime to give the Corsairs a 1-0 non-conference women's soccer win over Westfield State at Alumni Field on Tuesday night.

The Corsairs' Nerida Montrand (Brockton/Lynn, Mass.) sent a ball in to the right side of the goalkeeper box that Prout and Westfield State goalkeeper Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass.) converged on, and Prout won the battle for the ball and rolled a shot inside the far post for the game winner.

UMD improves to 7-6-5 on the season, while Westfield is now 7-6-2.

Westfield generated a number of good scoring chances in the second half and overtime.   Early in the second half, Bella Eduardo (Chicopee HS/Springfield, Mass.) sent a thru ball to Caitlin McGregor (Minnechaug/Hampden, Mass.) who was in clean against Corsairs' netminder Jaimee O'Brien ((West Springfield, Mass.), but McGregor's final touch was just too far and allowed O'Brien to come out and win the ball.

Less than a minute later, the Owls played another thru ball to Nicole Chretien (North Attleboro, Mass.) with O'Brien out of position, but a Corsairs' defender rushed back and won the footrace to the ball to thwart another chance.

Westfield was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area after a Corsairs handball with 25 minutes to play, and Eduardo's free kick was saved by O'Brien.

The Owls had a flurry of chances midway through the first overtime but could not convert, setting up Prout's heroics.

O'Brien finished with eight saves, while Falcone made seven.

Both teams went end to end throughout the match, with Westfield finishing with a 20-18 edge in total shots, but the Owls had much the better of the scoring chances.

Westfield honored it's six seniors before the game. Falcone, MacGregor, Chretien, Ashley Levya (Walpole) , Casey Rotti (Wachusett/Rutland, Mass.), and Amanda Egan (Coventry, RI) have been a part of two MASCAC Championship teams and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Westfield will return to conference action on Saturday, travelling to Salem State for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
