WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  Grace Jones' RBI ground out in the sixth inning proved to drive in the winning run in game 2 as Westfield State softball worked a split with Trinity College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Hartford, Conn.

Jones put the Owls up 4-3 on the way to a 5-3 win over the Bantams, after the Westfield fell to Trinity 8-0 in the opener.

Tied at 3-3 in the decisive sixth inning, Westfield's Sarah Hough led off with a double, advanced to third when Mia Alfonso reached on an error, then Jones ground ball up the middle forced the runner at second but let Hough scurry home from third with the go-ahead run.

Westfield tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Hannah Wodecki reached on an error, moved to third on a flyout, and scored on another double from Hough.

Stephanie Scoville (W, 9-3) picked up the win in relief of starter Katherine Canty.  Scoville struck out seven in four innings, allowing three hits and one run.     Wodecki finished 2-4 with a triple and two runs scored.   She added two more RBI to move her school-record total this season to 48.

Starter Heather Ross (2-3) took the loss for Trinity.  Abigail Alper delivered RBI singles in the third and fifth innings to produce two of the Bantams' three runs.

In the opener, Trinity starting pitcher Erin Girard (W, 2-3) shut down the Owls on just three hits, two by Owls senior SS Alyssa Clark.

Westfield starter Gianna Conte (L, 5-3) tossed all six innings for the Owls, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs while striking out three.

Taylor Mikolajczak and Mckenna True each rapped out three hits for the Bantams.

Westfield is now 20-10 after the split, while Trinity is 19-11.

League-leading Westfield will be back in MASCAC conference action on Saturday, hosting Fitchburg State in a doubleheader that will also be the Owls senior day.
