Late Third Period Goal From Gilbert Secures 7-6 Win Over Falcons

FITCHBURG, MA - On Thursday, January 16th the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team traveled to Fitchburg, MA to take on the Falcons of Fitchburg State University for a MASCAC conference matchup. The AMCATS won the game 7-6.

The game got off to an early start with a goal from Guillaume Coulombe less than a minute into the first period. Almost six minutes later the AMCATS would find the back of the net for their second time of the night, this time off the stick of Brandon Della-Paolera on the power play. The Falcons found themselves up on the board just past the halfway point of the first period making it a 2-1 game. However the AMCATS answered back quick with a pair of goals just a minute apart from each other. The first coming from Matthew Byrne on the power play followed by a goal from Matthew Gilbert to make it 4-1 with just over five minutes left in the first. Undettered the Falcons tagged on their second goal just a minute late to cut the AMCATS lead in half. The first period would end with a score of 4-2 in favor of the AMCATS.

The second period would see far less action than the first as neither team found the back of the net until over halfway through the period. It was the AMCATS who struck first in the second with another goal from Gilbert a little over twelve minutes into play. Byrne notched his second of the night nearly five minutes later, giving the AMCATS a 6-2 lead in the second period. With just five seconds left to play in the second period, the Falcons would again cut the AMCATS lead in half making it 6-3 as the game entered its final period.

Starting just over two minutes into the third period, the Falcons started making their come back with a power play goal to cut the AMCATS lead down to just two goals. Fitchburg would find the back of the net two more times to tie the game up at six goals a piece just under three minutes left to play in regulation. Just when the fans thought the game was going into overtime, Matthew Gilbert tucked in his third goal of the night giving the AMCATS the lead with 37 seconds left on the clock. The game would end with a score of 7-6 in favor of the AMCATS.

  • This marks the AMCATS first win over the Falcons in the programs history.
  • Matthew Gilbert earned his first career Hat Trick in the AMCATS win over the Falcons.
  • This is the highest scoring total that the AMCATS have experienced in its history with 13 total goals scored on the evening.
  • The AMCATS now sit in second place in the MASCAC with a record of 5-2 with 7 games played.
