Regis Sweeps Mass. Maritime, 7-0 and 12-4

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College Softball swept Mass Maritime 7-0, and 12-4 in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24, at Regis Softball Field.

GAME ONE: REGIS 7, MASS. MARITIME 0

Regis outhit Mass. Maritime by a margin of 9-1, as Mel Rees (Middleborough, Mass.) and Chloe Beland (Southborough, Mass.) went 2-for-3 including an RBI from Beland in the first inning, as well as scoring the second run of the game.

The Pride clinched the lead right away in the bottom of the first inning, after a single from Beland advanced Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) to third, just before scoring the first run after an error from the Buccaneers. Rees grounded out to first for the Buccaneers first out, moving Beland into scoring position. Beland advanced to home on a wild pitch, to lead 2-0 going into the second inning.

There were no runs scored by either team in the second inning.

Beland started the top of the third with a single to right field, just before Rees knocked her in after hitting a double to right center. Continuing the momentum, Lexi Nichols (Grandby, Conn.) hit a double to bring in Rees, scoring the fourth Pride run. After reaching first on a fielder's choice with one out, Abby Erickson (Worcester, Mass.) advanced to third after a single from Grace Motto (Wareham, Mass.). Motto was caught stealing but opened up the opportunity for Erickson to take advantage and score the fifth run for Regis. Erickson scored, to increase the lead with five runs.

There were no hits from the Buccaneers in the fourth inning. The final two runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Maddy Bradish (Hudson, N.H.) singled to left, later stealing second, just before a single from Burke put her in scoring position. Bradish scored, while Burke advanced to third after an error from Mass. Maritime. The Pride earned the final run with two outs just after a single from Erickson brought in the final run, for the Pride to lead 7-0.

Rees pitched seven innings for the Pride, striking out seven batters while only allowing one hit.

 

GAME TWO: REGIS 12, MASS. MARITIME 4

Regis caught an early lead in the bottom of the first inning with two outs. With one runner on base and in scoring position, Nichols singled to second base bringing in Beland for the first run.

No runs were scored from either team in the second and third inning.

The Buccaneers clinched the lead in the top of the fourth, after a double from Jennamarie Klemp brought in the first run to tie the game at 1-1. With two runners on base and one out, Ryleigh Ward hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Kelsey Booker, to lead 2-1 at the bottom of the inning.

After a walk for Motto put one runner on base, Burke had timely hitting to coin a double to right center, bringing in Motto to tie the game 2-2, leading into the fifth inning. The Buccaneers scored two runs with three hits in the top of the fifth to then lead 4-2.

The Pride responded with two runs after a single from Marissa Allen (Coventry, R.I.) brought in two runs, tying the game at 4-4 heading into the top of the sixth.

The Pride held the Buccaneers to no runs in the top of the sixth.

Burke started off the inning with a triple to left center. Beland earned a walk to then steal second. With runners on second and third, Rees put the ball into play with a double to right field, knocking in two runs to clinch the lead, 6-4. After a walk advanced Nichols to first, Nichols and Rees then advanced on a wild pitch. Erickson hit a single to bring in two runs, to extend the lead, 8-4. The Pride then had a two out rally, scoring six more runs, to finish with a victory of 12-4.

Mya Gaspie (Hooksett, N.H.) earned the win for the Pride, pitching six innings with three strikeouts and eight hits.

Regis (9-21, 3-11 GNAC) is scheduled to host Dean College on Saturday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Mass. Maritime (11-13, 2-10 MASCAC) is set to travel to face Curry College on Wednesday, May 1, at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
