Volleyball: Bucs Split With Lynx and Grims

HENNIKER, N.H. -- The Maritime volleyball team traveled to New England College on Saturday for an afternoon doubleheader with Lesley University and NEC. The Buccaneers came out on top convincingly against Lesley, 3-0, and then lost to the Pilgrims on their home court, 3-0.

Match One

The Basics

Final: Buccaneers 3, Lynx 0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-6)

Records: Maritime 3-8

               Lesley 0-13

On The Court

For The Bucs

  • Shayla Narodowg led all players with nine kills. Alex Smith added four kills. 
  • Keira Whalen had 15 assists in the win. 
  • Narodowg racked up a career-high 10 aces. Whalen tied her career-high of seven. 
  • Defensively, Alaina Liddell had five digs.
  • Chloe Johnson had a solo block in the match.
  • The Buccaneer posted their highest hitting percentage of the season, .275, and were led in hitting by Kolby Barbieri at .429.

For The Lynx

  • Emma Welch led the Lynx with three kills. She also had a team-high three aces and led all players defensively with six assists. Welch also had a solo block in the loss.
  • Mia Santilli had four assists to lead the team.
  • Lesley hit at a -.205 clip with Welch leading with a .083 percentage.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers never trailed in the first set as they took a big 17-10 lead midway through the game. Narodowg held the serve for seven of the next eight points and the Bucs went on an 8-0 run to win the game 25-10.

Lesley took a 3-1 lead early in set two then Narodowg took over the serve for the Bucs. The Bucs went on a 12-0 streak in that time, including five aces from Shayla to go up 13-3. The Lynx scored a few points after that but the Bucs held the momentum and went on another big run, this time 11-4 and led 24-7. Lesley picked up the next three points to make it 24-10 and then the Bucs finished off the game, winning 25-10.

In set three, Whalen took the serve to start things off and had four aces to begin the set and the Bucs kept the serve to go up 9-0. Lesley got three points back quickly and then Maritime only allowed them to score three more times finishing game three on a 16-3 run to win the set, 25-6, and put the match to bed, 3-0.

              Maritime 3-9

On The Court

For the Bucs

  • Narodowg led the Bucs in match two with five kills. Whalen and Johnson each had four in the loss.
  • Whalen posted another 15 assists offensively and had two aces.
  • Defensively, Isabelle Miazga had 12 digs to lead Maritime.
  • The Bucs had a .019 hitting percentage, led by Whalen at .300.

For the Pilgrims

  • Samantha Vargas has nine kills in the match. Tatiana Sampson had five of her own.
  • Aurora Gutierrez-Macias had 10 assists offensively. 
  • Arianna Blaize Llamas led all players with six aces. 
  • Defensively, Jaycie Kodama had a match-high 19 digs. Blaize Llamas had 10. 
  • The Grims hit at a .283 clip, led by Livia Elfering at .600.

How It Happened

New England controlled the first two sets of the match. As a top team in the region, they were met by a tough Bucs team who kept the score close, even tied at 5-5 early on, before they sprinted out to a 21-7 lead after a 16-2 run. Maritime scored three more in the game but it wasn't enough as the Grims took the first set, 25-10.

Maritime led 2-0 very early on in the second set, and though they fell behind 5-4, they kept it close to 8-6. From that point, NEC scored the next 14 points to take a commanding 22-6 lead. The Bucs scored one more and the Pilgrims scored the three points they needed to win set two, 25-7.

In set three, the Buccaneers never backed down, taking an early lead and then leading 15-13 midway through the game. The teams went back and forth with neither team scoring more than three points in a row at any point. Down 21-20, NEC tied the game at 21-21, the teams traded points to make it 22-22 and then NEC scored three in a row to win the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.

The Buccaneers are off until Saturday, October 8th when they will travel to Western Mass to take on Bay Path at 3pm.
