EVERETT, Mass. – Senor Nate Chase's (Plainfield, Ill.) second goal of the game, coming with two seconds left in regulation, propelled the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team to a 6-5 win over Fitchburg State in non-conference action Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Kevin Perry (Hull, Mass.) gave Fitchburg State a 1-0 lead when he scored at the 12:27 mark of the opening period. The Leopards evened the score when freshman Guillaume Bose (San Jose, Calif.) put home the rebound of a freshman Anthony Blad (Suffield, Conn.) blocked shot. Classmate Sam Milnes (Middletown, R.I.) also picked up an assist on Bose's first collegiate marker. The Falcons took a 2-1 lead with 1:06 left in the frame on a shorthanded goal from junior Joseph Miller (Marlton, N.J.).
  • The second period Saw the Leopards score three times to take a 4-3 lead. At 10:45, Chase skated in alone to tie the game at 2-all before senior Georgy Gorodetsky (Yekaterinburg, Russia) put the hosts ahead at 12:38 when he was set up on the power play by seniors Connor Busch (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Connor Beaudet (Buffalo, N.Y.).
  • Fitchburg State evened the score just 2:15 later on a goal from freshman Rece Bergeman (Newark, Del.), however, Wentworth took a 4-3 lead with 90 seconds left in the period when sophomore Jake McKenelley (Middleton, Mass.) scored from Chase and Busch.
  • Wentworth extended its lead to 5-3 when Gorodetsky and Busch set up Bose for this second of the game, coming on the power play at 4:57 of the third. The Falcons scored twice in a span of 5:36 to come back and tie the game. Junior Brian Glover (Baldwinsville, Mass.) scored 7:35 while sophomore Ryan Murphy (Wayzata, Minn.) got the equalizer at 13:11.
  • With the game appeared to be headed for overtime, Busch carried the puck into the zone and fed senior Adam Tracey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) low on the boards. Tracey wedged the puck out and found Chase, who one-timed a shot inside the left pad of sophomore Chris Mattone (New Windsor, N.Y.) with two ticks left.
  • Chase finished with two goals and an assist, while Busch had four assists.
  • Sophomore Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) picked up the win in the final 40 minutes of action, making 17 saves. Classmate Ryan Bonnvie (Falmouth, Maine) played the first period, making six saves. Mattone turned aside eight shots in 15 minutes of action, coming on in relief of junior Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.), who made 30 stops in just under 45 minutes of action.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight marked the 31st all-time meeting between the two programs. Winners of two straight, Wentworth now holds a 17-10-4 series advantage.
