Regis Rally Falls Short in Season Opener

WESTON, Mass. – After the Pride took an early lead in the first half, Mass Maritime scored four consecutive times and then held off a Regis College rally as the Buccaneers won, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's collegiate soccer match at Regis Stadium.

Midway through the first half, just after a foul on the Buccaneers, Agu Silva-Olivera (Lunenburg, Mass.) sent a free kick to the right side of the box, and William Comeiro (Woburn, Mass.) redirected the ball into the net for the first goal of the match. Less than two minutes later, in the 29th minute of play, the Buccaneers responded with a goal to even the score at 1-1, where it would remain heading into halftime.

Offensive momentum carried over into the second half for the Buccaneers, as Brody Calvert scored his second goal of the game to put Mass Maritime in the lead, 2-1, in the 47th minute. The Buccaneers went on to score two additional goals to lead 4-1 at the 78-minute mark, with Calvert completing a hat trick.

The Pride were able to take advantage of two penalty kick opportunities within the final three minutes of action, as Dane Peterson (San Diego, Calif.) coined his first collegiate goal for the Pride and then Silva-Oliveira drew a foul within the box and converted the penalty kick to bring the home team within one goal, but time would run out.

Mass Maritime goalie Preston Joia remained in net for the entire duration of the match, making six saves for the Buccaneers. Regis starting goalkeeper Kyle Weidemann (Piscataway, N.J.) stopped three of the Buccaneer shots on goal in the first half before Caleb Russo (Brookfield, N.H.) came in for the Pride and made one save in the second half.

Regis (0-1) is set to travel to face Salem State on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 7:00 p.m. Mass Maritime (1-0) will head to New York to face SUNY Maritime College next Saturday, Sept. 7, starting at 2 p.m.
